My Dream, My Passion
so excited to announce we breed gorgeous Melanistic kittens here at Summerspride photos below
Bengal cats and Charcoal colour
The foundation cats of the Bengal breed were hybrids of the domestic cat and the Asian Leopard Cat (ALC) (Prionailurus bengalensis). Some Bengals have a darker coat colour and dark face mask and dorsal stripe, these are termed Charcoal. Charcoal colour is the result of the ALC Agouti gene (Apb) combined with the domestic cat non-agouti gene (a).
- Charcoal bengals generally have a dark charcoal coloured coat, dark mask, cape down their back, they also have goggles around their eyes, I just love the stunning wild look of charcoal bengals, they have become an addiction to me :)
- charcoal bengals are genetically Apb/a they have one copy of the ALC Agouti gene and one copy of the domestic cat non-agouti gene
- double charcoal carriers Apb/Apb look like a charcoal Bengal as they often have a mask but no cape
- melanistic/smoke/solid bengals can look similar to a charcoal they are genetically a/a if you breed am a/a with an Apb/Apb your whole litter will be charcoal Apb/a very exciting :)
- Our first Charcoal bengal arrived here in 2014, after having bred three stunning charcoal kittens and one amazing stunning solid girl we have decided to purchase our own Apb/Apb double charcoal carrier boy, to produce whole litters of charcoals with our stunning solid a/a girl in 2017 we are so excited for the year ahead :-) we will ofcourse be producing charcaol kittens from Dream and Sambuca before then, waitig list is open :-)

Genetics
Charcoal Pattern - Bengal Cat
The Bengal cat breed consists of hybrid animals originally developed from crosses between the domestic cat (Felis sylvestris catus) and the Asian Leopard Cat (ALC) (Prionailurus bengalensis). Although the original intention was to replicate the exotic spotted ALC coat in domestic cats, some hybrids sport an unusual coat marking of a darker face mask and dark thick dorsal stripe (cape). This pattern has generated great interest among Bengal enthusiasts. Terra Sinclair, a Bengal Cat breeder, postulated from breeding outcomes that the “charcoal” pattern was produced by the combination of a domestic cat non-agouti allele (a) and an ALC agouti allele (APb), thus conferring the darker markings on their coat pattern. Research by Drs. Liza Gershony and Leslie Lyons has confirmed this mode of inheritance of the pattern. The VGL offers a test that helps breeders/owners determine the Charcoal status and breeding potential of their cats.
